Top Gun 3 is officially happening, with Tom Cruise set to return as the iconic Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The announcement was made by Paramount Pictures during its presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, exciting fans across the world.
Veteran producer Jerry Bruckheimer will also return for the upcoming sequel, continuing the franchise that has become one of Hollywood’s most successful action series.
The third installment was first revealed to be in development in 2024, with screenwriter Ehren Kruger attached to the project. Kruger previously co-wrote Top Gun: Maverick alongside Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie.
Released in 2022, Top Gun: Maverick became a massive global blockbuster and played a major role in reviving cinemas after the COVID-19 pandemic. The film earned over $1.5 billion worldwide against a production budget of approximately $170 million, making it one of Tom Cruise’s biggest career successes.
The movie marked Cruise’s return to the role of Maverick 36 years after the original Top Gun released. In Maverick, Cruise’s character returns to the elite flight school to train a new generation of fighter pilots for a dangerous mission.
One of the emotional highlights of the film was Maverick’s relationship with Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, played by Miles Teller, the son of Maverick’s late best friend Goose from the original film.
The sequel also introduced several rising Hollywood stars including Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Monica Barbaro, Danny Ramirez, Jay Ellis, Greg Tarzan Davis, and Manny Jacinto as the new group of pilots.
The cast also featured Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, and Charles Parnell in supporting roles.
Top Gun: Maverick also became the final on-screen appearance of Val Kilmer as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky. Kilmer, who was one of the original stars of the 1986 film, passed away in 2025.
While Paramount has not yet revealed the release date or storyline for Top Gun 3, the confirmation of Tom Cruise’s return has already generated massive excitement among fans eager to see Maverick back in action once again.
